Today we would like to review a classic Japanese anime. Hakujaden is released in 1958 and become the first full color animation played on the big screen at Japan. Toei is involved in the making of this Japanese animation.

The story is taken from a Chinese legend and revolved around Su Chien (Xu – Xian) and Pai Nhian (Bai - Niang). Su Chien is an ordinary man and he is learning to become a scholar while Pai Nhian is a white serpent princess.

So many movie is adapted from this Chinese legend, Madame White Snake is a one of the famous Chinese mythology. If you are curious of what happened between Su Chien and Pai Nhian, then just watch this old and classic anime.

This anime has a unique story about unpopular high school boy named Yohta. When Moemi a girl that Yohta like told him that she love some one else, Yohta rent a video girl tape from eccentric video rental. When Yohta played the tape suddenly a girl come out from the tv screen, that girl is Video Girl Ai and then Ai lives with Yohta to help Yohta and Moemi relationship.

Because Yohta VCR is malfunctioning when he played the tape Ai character isn’t the same with the supposed to be personality designed for her. In the latter episode of this Japanese Animation, Ai is being recalled by her creator and Yohta is fighting to get her back.

Yohta and Ai grew closer when they are together, and they are starting to bound by love. If you like a romantic and funny story Video Girl Ai is a good anime for you to watch but this anime is not suitable for young children and some of the scene is made for adult audience. The character and story are created by Masakazu Katsura a famous anime and manga artist.

Zenki

The story of this Japanese animation revolved around Chiaki Enno and Zenki. Centuries ago Master Ozune Enno bound the demon guardian Zenki into his service to fight evil. When the mission is completed Karuma and Zenki was sealed away until needed again. Chiaki Enno as the Enno descendant is able to break the seal on Zenki and she is a school girl. Zenki is bound in a child sized form when not fighting evil because he is defiant so Chiaki must use the power of the bracelet which appears on her wrist to bring him to full fighting stature.

The Seeds of Karuma cause people to turn into monsters embodying a vice which Zenki defeats so that he can eat the Seed. Set 3 adds demon / guardian Goki who boost Zenki’s power to the next level and usually provides a shield to protect the rest of the team of Chiaki, her Granma Saki, Saki’s brother Abbot Jukai, his assistant Kurabayashi and sometimes helping out hero Sohma Miki. This is another great fighting anime with a great story and a good humor.

Yakitate Japan

Hello fellow anime hunters today we would like to review Yakitate Japan, this unique Japanese animation told the story about Azuma and his friends. The anime starts when Azuma goes to the Phantasia Main Branch Store expecting to get a job only to discover that he has to compete for it in a series of exams. Azuma also starts at a disadvantage as he loses almost all of the ten points he needs to avoid being disqualified. It is in this arc that Azuma meets Kawachi, Kuroyanagi, Tsukino and Suwabara Kai. Shortly after the competition, Azuma and Kawachi get jobs at Phantasia’s Southern Branch store. A few stories take place there as they meet Ken Matsushiro and Azuma competes against a skilled but pampered baker.

This anime is a little bit funny with a unique story about a baker and a bakery. The expression and reaction to the taste are exaggerated that's what makes this cartoon so funny. It also reminds me of classic Born To Cook anime and some of hongkong comedy movies about cooking.

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle

This anime told the story about a group of people who has to move through time and space. Syaoran, Sakura, Kurogane and Fai has to travel to find the mysterious feather. In their continuing journey to find the feather that are the fragments of Sakura’s lost memory, the group move through time and space with Mokona the teleportation animal with a lot of other ability. To be able to do this they have to give their precious belonging to the dimension witch.

One of the episode of this Japanese animation tells us their journey to the “Land of The Birdcage” a seemingly peaceful country, they learn that the king of the country possesses a mysterious power. They learn that mysterious power comes from Sakura’s feather. This anime was created by Clamp almost all the character are taken from their previous works. Syaoran and Sakura comes from their previous anime Card Captor Sakura, Mokona comes from Magic Knight Rayearth and some other character also comes from their previous works.

Vash also known as the Humanoid Typhoon has been credited with the destruction of several towns, but miraculously there is no record of what happen to those who catch up to Vash. They either crawl away wounded (mostly from self inflicted damage) or they stagger away in disbelief that such a dork could possibly be the man they are looking for. This anime is a little bit funny with a lot of gun fighting scene.

This animated movie is filled with lovely hand drawn images, fantastical storyline and fabulous talking cats, it conjures up a world that is at once strange and haphazard, yet abides by its own peculiar internal logic. This Anime revolved around Tsukamoto Tenma her sister and her friends. Tsukamoto Tenma is a second grader in high school who, like other girl her age, falls in love. However, she could not bring herself to confess her love to her classmate Karasumaru. She discovers that Karasumaru will transfer out next year and with the help of her friends and her little sister Yakumo, tries to confess her love.

Tenma also uses unorthodox method such as disguising herself as a nurse or shooting arrow with a love letter attached to express her feelings for him. On the other hand, Harima Kenji, a delinquent, has a feelings for Tenma. I don’t like the ending of this series because it’s confusing. I recommended neon genesis evangelion as one of the best mecha (robot) anime.

The Story is a synopsis of the series from beginning until the final battle between the magic knights, Princess Emerald and Zagato. Zagato is the person who kidnapped and captured Princess Emerald. The ending is a battle of the giant mecha (robot). If you want to know the story after the battle you could watch the Magic Knights Rayearth series. Personally I don’t like the OVA but I like the series and the Manga (Japanese Comic).

With her last bit of strength, the princess summons forth the three girls who must fulfill their destiny to become the Magic Knights in the hopes of saving her world. This Japanese animation has good adventure story and character design. The best thing in this anime is the Mecha (giant robot) design.

This anime story revolved around Urashima Keitaro. When Keitaro was a child, he has a little girl friend. When the girl had to move away, the two made a promise to meet each other at Tokyo University when they grew up. Year later, Keitaro has failed his entrance exam twice and his parents refuse to support him any longer. His grandmother gives him refuge and employment as caretaker of her inn, which just happens to serve as a female dormitory. The eclectic group of tenants tease, annoy and berate him to no end. Still, Keitaro won’t ever give up his promise to meet his childhood friend again, even though he can’t remember her name. This Japanese animation has a funny story and character, I recommended this as the funniest romantic comedy anime.

This Japanese animation series focused on Lain Iwakura an adolescent girl living in suburban Japan and her introduction to the Wired, a global communication network similar to the internet. Lain lives with her middle class family which consist of her inexpressive older sister Mika, her cold as ice mother and her computer obsessed father. The first ripple on the pond of Lain’s lonely life appears when she learns that girls from her school have received an e-mail from Chisa Yomoda, a schoolmate who committed suicide. When Lain receives the message at home, Chisa tell her (in real time) that she is not dead, but has just abandoned the flesh and has found God in the Wired. From then on, Lain is bound to a quest that will take her ever deeper into both the network and her own thoughts.

This Japanese animation is another beautiful work by Ghibli studio, a stunning work by Hayao Miyazaki. This anime story is very unique and enjoyable to watch.

This anime was adapted from the famous Final Fantasy VII games. Two years after the events in Final Fantasy VII a disease called Seikon-Shoukougun” or Geostigma is spreading through the planet. This disease is believed to have been caused by the body fighting off foreign material that invaded the body two years earlier, at the end of Final Fantasy VII. Guilt ridden and haunted by his past, ex soldier Cloud Strife has decided to live secluded, solitary life away from his friends while maintaining Strife Delivery Service, whose headquarters is located in Tifa Lockheart’s bar, the Seventh Heaven. Tifa’s bar serves as an orphanage for children stricken with geostigma. This 3 D animation has great battle scene and story just like the game.

Dragon Ball GT

The Dragon Ball GT anime is the continuation of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. Goku is accidentally transform back into his child form thanks to Pilaf trying to use the black star dragon balls. Now Goku along with grown up Trunks and his granddaughter Pan, must travel the universe to search for these Black Star Dragon Balls and return them to the earth within one year, or the earth will be destroyed. Of course it’s not going to be easy, but with the help of a robotic friend named Giru they’re sure to succeed. The bigger question is what new danger will await our heroes in space and when they return to earth.

It’s just feels like a flashback of the movie when Goku is still 14 year old with a new graphic and characters, but I can’t wait to see the new evolving Super Saiyan in this anime series. Originally the Dragon Ball manga (Japanese comics) was created by Akira Toriyama, it only last until the Dragon Ball Z, you can’t find Dragon Ball GT story on the manga.

This time Goku and his friend must faced the evil Vegeta, Raditz and the most powerfull alien Freza at Planet Namec. After returned from planet Namec Goku must faced the evil Cell and the Android which created by the former enemies the Red Ribbon on earth. After the Cell chapter Goku must defeat new enemy the evil Buu which have the ability to absorbs his enemy ability.

This anime revolved around Son Goku an alien raised by an old man. Goku meet Bulma and the adventures is started to collect all the seven dragon ball. The next thing this Japanese animation show how Goku defeat the army of Red Ribbon. After that the story evolved around the World Martial Arts Tournament (Tenka Ichi Budokai). Goku learn a move called Kamehameha from the old man to defeat all the fighter. Goku meet a lot of friend on his journey and then he must defeat the Evil God Picolo.

I loved the Super Deformed character in this anime, they have funny and cute design just like the video games.

The story of this anime revolved around Hideki. Hideki is a typical 20 year old slacker. He didn’t get into college straight out of high school, so he’s working a dead-end job, can’t find a girlfriend and is perpetually broke. If only he had a persocon (a humanouid robot) to keep him company, perhaps things wouldn’t be so bad. The problem with persocon is they are incredibly expensive and it would take Hideki a lifetime to afford one. Then, one day Hideki finds a particularly cute female persocon dumped in a pile of trash, so he decides to take her home. As they say, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Persocon that Hideki found was a special one with special ability.

A young Taiwanese professional assassin codenamed Glass Heart committed suicide by jumping off a building, and her heart was pierced by a metal fence. After the accident she was hospitalized and miraculously her life was saved by heart transplantation. During her recovery she began to experience strange dreams she saw a glimpse of memory, which led her to Japan looking for the donor of her heart, who happens to be Kaori Makimura, former partner of City Hunter. Personally I’m a big fan of City Hunter manga because the story is very funny, the City Hunter Anime is interesting too but I don’t like what happened to Kaori Makimura in this Angel Heart Anime, but I keep watching Angel Heart to see the continuation of the story and plot.

But due to chance, necessity or a sense of honor. Kintaro never takes advantage of these newfound feelings.

Kintaro Oe ia a 25 year old dropout from Tokyo University Law School, he rides his bicycle around Japan “ learning about life”. He takes various part-time jobs and meets different kind of girls while he travel. This anime is a six part 1995 OVA and has more subtle content, while the 10 volumes manga (Japanese Comics) is more suitable for adult readers.

Surprised that human could see her, Rukia accidentally involved him in a battle between the shinigami and Hollow (an evil soul that devours good souls). Hurt in the process to protect him, the only way that Rukia could save Ichigo’s family was by giving him her shinigami power.

Without her powers, Rukia was forced to stay in the land of the living in a false body until her power returned while Ichigo assumed her responsibility as the shinigami. This Japanese animation is definitely the most thrilling anime because of the fighting scene and the depressing movie soundtracks.

Grave of Fire flies was one of anime masterpiece from Hayao Miyazaki, Hayao Miyazaki also well known for Japanese Animation such as Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away (oscar winner), Nausicaa, Howl’s Moving Castle (Oscar nominated) and Castle in The Sky.

Grave of Fireflies story set in Japan during World War II, the story revolved around Setsuko and Seita a homeless brother and sister who losed their mother in the firebombing of Tokyo. They live with their aunt’s family for short time and then they moved into abandoned shelter where a lot of fireflies painting the sky. The story has a bitter and sad ending and the movie was narrated by Seita soul.

Grave of the Fireflies is a touching and extremely painful and depressing movie to watch it is such an emotional experience and the greatest Japanese animated picture ever made.

Grave of the Fireflies was produced by Studio Ghibliand directed by Isao Takahata and the story is based on a bestselling novel by Akiyuki Nosaka.

Tonari No Totoro / My Neighbour Totoro

Tonari No Totoro (My Neighbour Totoro) is a fantasy movie about Japanese family’s life, who move to a small town. All the story focused on the Kasukabe’s family and their new neighbour. Totoro is a forest spirit that become the Kasukabe’s family neighbour. Two young girls Satsuki and Mei find that they share their home with the forest spirit. Satsuki and Mei Father is a university professor while their mother is sick in the hospital. Their mother condition is getting worse so Mei determined to see her mother by herself.

Totoro was one of masterpiece from Hayao Miyazaki and one of well known movie from Studio Ghibli. The movie describe a very wonderful relationship beetween human and nature. With the cute characters of the little girls and a lovable creatures this movie will give you a cheerful and new experience into the world of Totoro.
